Grace and Forgiveness In Troubled Times

I like football, and I've been following this story with much interest. It is a tragedy, and Josh Brent, defenstive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys may well go to jail for manslaughter under a DUI charge. Jerry Brown, a practice squad linebacker for Dallas and longtime friend of Brent's was the passenger killed in Brent's one car accident. And yet in all of this, Jerry Brown's mom is praying for Brent, and wanted him to sit with the family at the funeral. That's grace. That's Christlike forgiveness in it's most tangible form. God bless the Brown family in these days of sorrow.
Jerry Brown's mother talks with Josh Brent

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is flying the family of the late Jerry Brown to Dallas today for the private memorial service for the former practice squad linebacker.
Brown was killed early Saturday morning in a single-car wreck. The man responsible for his death, nose tackle Josh Brent, who was arrested on intoxication manslaughter charges and is now out on bail, will also be at memorial service at the request of Brown’s mother.

“Josh will meet them at the airport,” Jones said on his radio show on KRLD-FM Tuesday morning. “She wanted Josh Brent to ride with them to the memorial service and sit with them during the service. They were best friends and teammates in college. Jerry was living with Josh…because of Josh’s generosity. They were on the way to the house when the accident happened. She wanted to be right with Josh. She wanted to express in every way she could how much they loved him and thought of him. She wanted him included with the family.”

(WSCR) In an incredible act of forgiveness, the mother of former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown, who was killed by teammate Josh Brent in a drunken driving accident, is asking that Brent be present with the family at Brown’s memorial service scheduled for Tuesday.

Brent was released on $500,000 bond Sunday after being charged with intoxication manslaughter, one day after drunkenly crashing his car, killing Brown.

Stacey Jackson, Brown’s mother, said she’s simply praying for Brent and his family and is asking that he attend Brown’s memorial service with her and her family.

“I was upset, but I realized that our youth today are young and stupid, and we were all once that age, and we’ve all done things we’re not proud of,” Jackson said on Monday’s Piers Morgan Tonight show on CNN. “I realized that everyone thinks they’re invincible, and everyone thinks, ‘it’s not going to happen to me.’ I know Josh Brent, and he’s been part of our family since Jerry went to the University of Illinois — all I can do is to pray for him and his family. I know [Brent] is hurting just as much as we are, because [he] and Jerry were like brothers.”
