U.S. West Coast Volcanoes and Fault Zones Heating Up

Two stories together here, the first on the flurry of quakes from Mt. Hood and the second on the movement beginning near the Salton Sea in California.  I carried a story a while back where geologists stated that the Salton Sea volcanic area could erupt with little notice.  They are getting a little notice right now...

100 recent earthquakes reported in swarm near Mt. Hood volcano

March 2014 GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. (KOIN) — Mount Hood has seen nearly 100 earthquakes in the past few days, but a local seismologist said they are nothing to worry about. Geologists said most of the recent earthquakes have been small with only 30 actually being large enough to tell where they occurred. Researchers said these earthquake swarms happen several times a year and are nothing to worry about. “I wouldn’t say be worried but maybe expect to feel an earthquake. It’s always interesting to feel an earthquake next to a volcano. These swarms in the past have produced earthquakes that were felt at Government Camp,” said Seth Moran, a seismologist at USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory. According to Moran, the quakes are not being caused by magma in the volcano moving, but instead by the tectonic plates shifting. Mount Hood last erupted in 1790. -Koin

3/27/2014 — Earthquake Swarm strikes Salton Sea Volcano — Volcanic Earthquakes FORECAST 24 hours prior

On March 26, 2014 .. an unnamed volcano in South-Central California showed moderate earthquake activity, as well as the caldera inside Yellowstone national park.

This led me to make a post (yesterday March 26, 2014), showing the unnamed volcano in South California, and stating we should watch the Salton Sea volcano for possible movement.

quote from yesterday (March 26, 2014):

The increase in activity along the edge of the craton will continue into the near term future due to the overall Pacific displacement occurring internationally.

Until things cool off internationally in the West Pacific, we can expect sizable displacement to occur along our plate in North America.  This means, Yellowstone, Colorado, Oklahoma, and other areas along the edge of the edge of the craton need to be aware of the possibility of movement in the near term.

Also.. the odd man out, Southern California , near Baja, sits primed, and now showing slight volcanic chamber activity.  Expect Salton Sea and Mono Lake to be showing some movement soon.”
